Researchers use microbial fermentation to obtain biofuels from waste biomass

Scientists have long proposed the use of microbial fermentation butanol production methods, but fermentation technology is difficult to achieve a breakthrough. A few days ago, a biological fermentation technology patented by Richard Kohn and Dr. Seon-Woo Kim of the University of Maryland (UMD) patented the use of natural microorganisms to ferment waste biomass and extract hexane and octane, which are important components of gasoline.

The two scientists converted biomass into biofuels containing ethanol, 1-butanol, and hexane and octane by culturing and separating microorganisms.

The biomass used by UMD's research team can be all plants, microorganisms, plants and microorganisms as food animals and their production waste, such as corn stover, sawdust, bagasse, rice bran, and so on. At the same time, they use microorganisms that rely on carbon dioxide for survival.
