Distinction between granite and marble

The difference between marble and granite

First, according to the cause of the stone:

Marble

Marble belongs to metamorphic rock

Metamorphic rock is another stone that is naturally metamorphosed by a stone under the influence of high temperature and high pressure and minerals. The qualitative change may be recrystallization, texture change or color change.

Natural marble is a metamorphic rock formed by the high temperature and high pressure of the original rock in the earth's crust. It belongs to medium hard stone and is mainly composed of calcite, limestone, serpentine and dolomite. There are usually obvious patterns and many mineral particles.

2, granite

Granite belongs to igneous rock

Igneous rocks are mainly formed by volcanic materials such as magma. The liquid magma under the surface is cooled and solidified. Mineral gases and liquids penetrate into the rock to form new crystals and various colors.

Generally dark colors. Natural granite is igneous rock, also called acid crystalline plutonic rock. It is the most widely distributed rock in igneous rock. It belongs to hard stone. The rock is hard and compact. According to its crystal grain size, it can be divided into "weijing" and "coarse crystal". And "fine crystal" three.

Second, according to the hardness difference:

The hardness of stone is calculated according to Mohs hardness. Mohs hardness is 6-7, which is hard stone, such as granite. Mohs hardness is 3-5 in medium hard stone, such as marble. Mohs hardness is 1-2 for soft stone. Such as limestone and dolomite.

Marble: Because marble generally contains impurities, and calcium carbonate is exposed to carbon dioxide, carbides, and moisture in the atmosphere, it is also easy to weather and dissolve, and the surface quickly loses its luster. Therefore, a small number of relatively stable and durable varieties such as white marble and Ai Yeqing can be used outdoors, and other varieties are not suitable for outdoor use, and are generally only used for interior decorative surfaces. Mohs hardness is 3-5.

Granite: Granite is harder than marble and is therefore difficult to process, but resistant to acid and weathering. It is not easy to weather and deteriorate, and the appearance color can be kept for more than 100 years, so it is mostly used for wall foundation and exterior wall finish. Granite is often used in advanced building renovation projects due to its high hardness and wear resistance, for example, the floor of the lobby. Mohs hardness is 6-7.

Third, the chemical composition distinction:

1. Marble: It belongs to carbonate stone. Its main component is calcium carbonate, accounting for more than 50%. Others include magnesium carbonate, calcium oxide, manganese oxide and silicon dioxide. There are usually obvious patterns and many mineral particles. (alkaline)

2, granite: mainly composed of quartz, feldspar, hornblende, pyroxene, olivine and biotite, belonging to silicate stone, its composition is mainly silica, accounting for 65% to 75%. (acidic)
