Innovative vibration damping technology for Sandvik Coromant long overhang cutting tools

A young engineer showed the original model of the damping mast, which was the result of his university graduation thesis. The ideas determine the way out, and Teeness's creative and imaginative engineers are aware of the seriousness of the vibration problem (especially the vibration of the borehole turning) and try to put their ideas into practice.
Through the collaboration with Sandvik Coromant and the continuous innovation, we have developed the world's unique Silent Tools damping tool .

Fifty years ago, due to the vibration of the tool during processing, the machining performance could not reach the optimal level, the quality of the parts was problematic, the noise level was too high, the tool life was too short, and even the waste was processed. In many cases, it is impossible to process at all, so it has great potential for improvement - people are looking forward to the selection and development of a new type of processing.

In the 1960s, Teeness began to study for decades to find out the root cause, nature and treatment of the vibration generated by the cutting edge. It has been well documented that vibration can be seen as a variable deflection of the cutting tool , and if there is no deflection, there is no vibration. Tool vibration is caused by dynamic cutting forces. As long as there is dynamic cutting force, the vibration will continue. Even in the continuous cutting of the surface, the cutting force will change rapidly and minutely. At that time, the main way to eliminate machining vibration was to increase the static stiffness of the tool , reduce the cutting force acting on the tool , and increase the dynamic stiffness. It is in the latter's consideration that Teeness has created a unique new idea by using passive dynamic dampers.

This idea is based on the vibration of a spring-loaded weight in the fluid in the tool bar (herein referred to as the mast). The extra weight is designed to vibrate under the stimulation of the cutting frequency. Compared with the frequency vibration generated by the cutting process, which is different from the boring bar, a neutral effect is formed: the damping effect is generated, and the vibration during machining Cannot be eliminated altogether, but can be minimized by inhibiting the tool from being within acceptable limits. The idea of creativity is based on this principle, and in the process of constant exploration and innovation of Teeness engineers, it has created a mast to meet the needs of the work. However, it is precisely when the R&D results are transformed into serious challenges – whether the tools are marketable, application areas and distribution channels are unknown.

After several years of research and development, Teeness came into contact with the world's leading cutting tool manufacturer in neighboring Sweden, seeking opportunities for cooperation. Sandvik Coromant was concentrating on the development of most metal-cut indexable insert tools , immediately optimistic about the great potential of the Teeness (TNS) concept, and pointed out the development direction of the damping mast. In 1973, the Coromant tool program adopted this concept. After a period of time, the vibration-damping tool system has taken off all the way, and it has been favored by people and has been widely used in the world.

The first Sandvik Coromant TNS damping masts are available in three diameter sizes: 32 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm, with lengths of 450 mm, 550 mm and 700 mm respectively - for trouble-free machining with overhangs up to ten Double diameter. The tips of these masts are interchangeable for quick adjustment and different types of tool holders and indexable inserts are available. The new design consists of a medium-to-heavy alloy block that is immersed in a special oil and spring-suspended. Special oil absorbs energy from the vibrations produced by processing and converts the energy into heat that is absorbed. The inertia of the alloy block can be set by the adjusting screw on the mast to set the vibration frequency and change the tension of the spring suspension to achieve the best damping effect. The mast also features an internal cooling system to aid in chip removal.

We have also made a number of improvements to the inner hole turning, even for the first product: the metal removal rate has doubled. When the overhang is eight times the diameter and the higher cutting parameters are used, the surface roughness of the finishing is greatly improved, the surface roughness is Ra 1.3, and the conventional solid mast is Ra 8.8 μm.

By 1980, Sandvik Coromant TNS introduced a short mast that used a suspension of seven times the diameter. The advantage of this mast is that it does not require adjustment to achieve an optimized damping effect. This design is a deep innovation that covers all possible vibration frequencies in the overhang range of the mast by means of a damping device. The use of re-innovation technology makes the use of damping tools easier and more convenient, while saving time.

Next, Sandvik Coromant's industry-leading tool material was used – not only as a cutting edge, but also as a mast sleeve that increases the static stiffness of the tool (static stiffness is 2.5 times that of steel). The overhang of the damper mast can be extended to twelve times the diameter. It also means that there are a large number of rotating tools that can use the damping bar. Make the impossible possible, everything is possible - the high cutting parameters of using hard alloys are just around the corner. Because the damping tool has solved the world's problems, it is widely recognized and accepted.

Since the 1980s, due to advances in technology, parts encountered in various manufacturing industries require deep hole machining, and sometimes such processing is quite complicated. For example, the aerospace industry, the energy industry, and the mold industry have a large number of complex holes or chambers that are difficult to process and require particularly strict requirements. At the same time, many manufacturers in the general engineering, automotive, and machine tool industries choose vibration-damping tools to solve problems that other tools cannot solve. This unique damping concept has been used in standard tools for more than a decade and is also used in custom-made tools for a wide range of special machine tools , parts and machining. For example, cylindrical, tapered, curved, and elliptical mast segments are machined. The purpose is to maximize the stiffness of deep hole machining to achieve the best damping effect. At the time, Teeness and Sandvik Coromant shared a wealth of expertise and valuable experience in designing and applying damping tools .
