Morphological characteristics of sandstone

Quartz, feldspar and other debris components account for more than 50% of the sedimentary clastic rocks. Sandstone is formed by the weathering, erosion and transportation of rocks in the source area. The rock is composed of two parts: debris and interstitial. In addition to quartz and feldspar, there are also muscovite, heavy minerals, cuttings, etc., and the interstitial includes two components: cement and crumb. Common cements are siliceous and carbonate cemented; heterogeneous components mainly refer to finer clay or silty materials deposited simultaneously with debris.

The composition and structure of the interstitial reflect the geological tectonic environment and physical and chemical conditions of sandstone formation. Sandstone can be divided into three categories according to its sedimentary environment: quartz sandstone, feldspar sandstone and lithic sandstone. Sand and sandstone form the main reservoir of oil, gas and groundwater. Sand and sandstone can be used as abrasives, glass materials and building materials. Certain sandstones and sandstones are rich in gold deposits such as gold, zircon, diamond, ilmenite and rutile.
