Russia's scientific research institutions will deploy unmanned submarine nuclear energy charging stations

At present, an endless number of underwater unmanned submersibles are driven by electricity. When the self-contained electricity storage device runs out of electricity, how can it be charged? To solve this problem, Russian scientific research institutions have been made into nuclear energy charging stations that are deployed on the sea floor and are expected to form a charging network.

According to the Russian Military News Network, the development of a submarine nuclear energy charging station is a Russian Arctic development project to be completed by 2020, jointly developed by the Central Design Bureau of Ruby Ocean Technology and the Russian Future Research Fund.

According to Litvinenko, the head of the future research fund's engineering research group, this type of charging station usually has no maneuvering servos. Its shape is like a small nuclear submarine, but it cannot move autonomously. The charging station has a plurality of compartments, each of which is provided with a nuclear reactor with a power of 24 megawatts, a turbine generator, power transmission and distribution equipment, a power storage device, a total station control system, and a data transmission system for sending information to the sea surface.

The chief designer of the Ruby Design Bureau, Toropov, stated that the above-mentioned charging station's establishment facilities and networking equipment were transported to the sea floor by a miniature submarine with a length of approximately 18 meters and a depth of 400 meters. It is expected that each such charging station can continuously work on the seabed for 30 years and a manual maintenance service will be required every 330 days.

According to reports, the main “customers” at these charging stations are unmanned submarines that are responsible for exploration of submarine mineral deposits and monitoring of underwater oil and gas pipelines. In addition, the Russian Ministry of Defense is presiding over the development of a submarine sonar monitoring network. Its main equipment is the Harmony submarine that detects various targets on the water surface, underwater and low grazing sea. This is a submarine unmanned underwater vehicle developed and recovered by the Russian Ministry of Defense. The submersible can be submerged into the seabed and networked stations. This submersible also needs to stop at the above charging station to "refuel."

In an interview with a Xinhua reporter, the Information Service of the Russian Future Research Foundation said that the submarine charging station complied with the IAEA’s safety requirements in terms of resistance to earthquakes, impacts, and nuclear leaks. After the completion of the development, the charging station will be handed over to Russia. Used by the Ministry of Defense.

The fund is currently unable to determine whether the IAEA can supervise this charging facility that may be used for military purposes.

It is reported that this type of submarine charging station will be deployed on the Arctic Ocean continental shelf and will establish a multi-site charging network when conditions are ripe. The above charging stations have passed the technical verification conducted by the relevant Russian authorities in accordance with the IAEA nuclear safety standards and are currently being tested at the “Krylov” National Science Center in Russia. If all goes well, the first such charging station will be opened in 2020. (Reporter Hao Hai)
