Recently, the research team led by Maher El-Kady, a scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, achieved a breakthrough in the manufacture of ultra-functional graphene capacitors using simple general-purpose equipment. The researchers first carefully fabricated two graphite oxide films, which were then placed in a conventional DVD drive, which was reduced to two graphene films after laser irradiation by a driver. These two graphene films have excellent electrical conductivity (1738 Siemens/m), a large surface area per unit weight (1520 m2/g), and high strength and flexibility. They are placed in an electrolyte (available for a variety of electrolytes), which themselves become the two poles of the capacitor and are charged, storing more than the power of a conventional flashlight battery in a matter of seconds. The capacitor has light weight, large storage capacity, short charging time, repeated charging and discharging 10,000 times without affecting performance and stable discharge even under high voltage, and the performance far exceeds any current electrochemical capacitor. The above research paper was published in the March 16 issue of Science. Some experts have commented that if the cost of manufacturing thin films can be reduced, graphene capacitors and rechargeable batteries will certainly create a new future for mankind.
