Experts Say that China's GM Food Safety Is Strictly Protected

Xinhua Net Hai April 4th (Yang Jinzhi and Zhan Jiaqi) Professors from Fudan University, Lu Baorong, Chairman of the International Society for Biosafety Research, and professors from Shanghai Jiaotong University and National Agriculture Genetically Modified Organism Standardization Committee Zhang Dabing recently stated that China has the ability to detect genetically modified foods. The advanced technology and the strict supervision of the import and sale of genetically modified foods and the strict protection of the safety of genetically modified foods.

The second lecture of the Shanghai Popular Science Forum on the 3rd
In the afternoon, it was held at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. The lecture focused on the safety of genetically modified foods. Experts such as Lu Baorong and Zhang Dabing made the above statements in lectures.

Professor Lu Baorong said that China has a sound regulatory system for genetically modified foods. The State Council promulgated the "Regulations on the Administration of Agricultural GMO Safety" in May 2001 and the Ministry of Agriculture implemented the "Administrative Measures on the Labeling of Agricultural Genetically Modified Organisms" in March 2002. At the same time, China has also signed an international legal agreement to regulate the transboundary movement of genetically modified organisms, the "Biosafety Protocol."

"In our country, if the food contains genetically modified ingredients, it must be clearly marked." Lu Baorong said, "A lot of edible oil products in China are marked on the oil pot using genetically modified soybeans, and our law enforcement agencies often go to supermarket stores for inspection."

Lu Baorong emphasized in particular: “The logo of genetically modified products does not mean that this thing is not good, but that people understand consumption, just like labeling a kind of food containing vitamin D. The country has allowed the presence of signs to prove that genetically modified foods and non- There is no significant difference in genetically modified foods."

Lu Baorong said that China has established a comprehensive evaluation and management system for genetically modified foods. The commercialization of any genetically modified product must be strictly reported and approved, and relevant certificates can be obtained for commercialization. "We have not yet seen one case of major casualties caused by genetic modification since GM foods were introduced to the market."

Zhang Dabing said: "China's GM food testing technology has reached the international advanced level, and the technology is very close to the EU and other regions, GM food testing time is fast. People even buy the test paper on the Internet, in the kitchen can detect food Is it genetically modified?"

Transgenic technology was born in the 1980s and refers to the introduction of artificially isolated and modified genes into the genome of organisms. Due to the introduction of genes, genetically modified organisms are caused.

Transgenic technology has developed rapidly and has been applied to a wide range of crops such as soybeans, corn, and rapeseed. In 2007, the global acreage of genetically modified plants reached 114.3 million hectares. In the United States, 70% of corn uses genetically modified technology. Transgenic crops have the advantages of high yield and insect resistance, but some people in the European Union and other regions are concerned about their food safety.
