Japan's Tamura Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Develops Low Residue Flux for Photovoltaic Cells

Tamura Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has developed a new flux “ultra-low-residue flux” that is used in the manufacture of solar cell modules. This product can reduce the flux residue that remains on the surface of the unit and interferes with the light received by the battery by 60%. The company will start with sample shipments and sales in May 2014, centered on the China market, a major source of solar cells.

One of the manufacturing steps of a solar cell module is to connect a plurality of solar cells in series. This process uses a very thin TAB line to connect the busbar electrode on the surface of the solar cell and the backside electrode of the adjacent solar cell. Mostly use solder to connect.

Before soldering, soldering fluxes are generally used to improve the connectivity by removing the electrode oxides. However, the diffusion area of this flux is too large, and there is a problem that white light remains on the light-receiving surface of the solar cell. White debris can hinder the solar cells from receiving light.

Tamura Manufacturing Co., Ltd. believes that solid substances such as rosin contained in solder flux are the main cause of residue diffusion. To this end, it has newly developed an “ultra-low residue solder flux”, which reduces the content of solid substances such as rosin and adds no New material that will become a residue. This product has the same oxide removal performance as previous products.

The demand for flux for electronic device packaging is based on the solder paste that is a mixture of solder and flux. Therefore, the demand for flux alone presents a decreasing trend. However, in the recent use of solar cells and LED manufacturing processes, there is an increasing demand for new fluxes. (Reporter: He Jiji, "Nikkei Electronics")
